The short version
Etsy’s Seller Handbook update dated 22 October 2026 is not a blanket ban on AI. It draws a sharper line between assisted creative work, product representation and instructions a buyer relies on.
For a listing, Etsy says to include at least one unedited photo of the actual item against a real background. Some exceptions may apply depending on the kind of item. Other listing photos may still be edited, including with AI, if they accurately show what the buyer will receive and do not hide flaws or make the item look materially different.
Separate the photo rule from the artwork rule
The unedited-photo requirement and Etsy’s continuing allowance for AI-generated art are different parts of the policy. The required real-item photo is evidence of the offered item. Additional images can be edited, but they must not mislead about its appearance or condition.
Etsy says AI-generated art can remain listed when the seller has a clear creative role and is transparent about the process. The handbook says sellers must disclose when an item was created using AI and must not present AI-generated work as handmade or entirely their own creation. The page does not turn every image-editing aid into a prohibited listing.
Functional instructions have a stricter standard
Patterns, recipes and instructions are not treated like a decorative illustration. Etsy says information buyers depend on to make or use an item must be the seller’s own work, not AI-generated. It also says a listing for these functional guides needs to show an actual result made using the instructions, rather than a simulated AI result.
A practical audit is to open each affected listing and ask: Is the item photo a real, unedited view where required? Do the other images match the delivered item? Are instructions original to the seller? Does the listing make the seller’s role clear? Etsy says existing listings that do not meet its new image requirements need to be updated. Confirm the live policy and any applicable exceptions before making a bulk change.
